Local floral designer to compete in national competition

Nicola Parker is headed to Palm Beach, Fla., to compete in the 45th annual Sylvia Cup Design Competition on Saturday, Sept. 22 as part of the Society of American Florists 128th annual convention.

Parker is a floral designer at g. johnson's Floral Images at Scurlock Tower, 6560 Fannin, Suite 230, Houston.

"It is an honor and a thrill to compete in this prestigious national contest alongside so many talented floral designers," Parker said in a press release.

During the Sylvia Cup Design Competition contestants are given two hours, the same amount of flowers and supplies and a surprise task. Three design experts will judge finished products on several factors, including originality, color and mechanics.

Contestants will include winners of state and regional floral industry design contests, designers of the year and members of the American Institute of Floral Designers. The competition's grand prize winner receives $3,000, with $500 going to the first runner-up and $250 awarded to the second runner-up.
