Pro Baseball: Christopher Young, Arizona Diamondbacks

Christopher Young went 2 for 4 with one RBI, one run and one walk in the Arizona Diamondbacks's 15-4 loss to the Florida Marlins on Monday. Young graduated from Bellaire High School.

Young is a 2001 graduate of Bellaire High School and a 16th-round selection (493rd overall) of the Chicago White Sox in the 2001 Major League Baseball draft. Young signed his first professional contract with Chicago on Aug. 19, 2001 and spent four seasons in the White Sox organization. In 2003 Young was named an Appalachian League all-star when he batted .290 with seven home runs, 28 RBIs and 21 stolen bases for Bristol (Rookie League). Two years later Young was named the White Sox minor league player of the year and a Baseball America first-team minor league all-star after hitting .277 with 26 home runs, 77 RBIs, 32 stolen bases and 100 runs scored for Birmingham of the Southern League (Double-A). After the 2005 season, Young was traded by Chicago to the Arizona Diamondbacks as the center piece of the four-player deal that netted the White Sox Javier Vazquez. During his first season in the Diamondbacks' system, Young batted .276 with 21 home runs and 77 RBIs for Tucson of the Pacific Coast League (Triple-A) to be named a triple-A all-star outfielder and a Baseball America second-team minor league all-star. Young made his big league debut with Arizona on Aug. 18, 2006 appearing in 30 games that season with 17 hits, including two homers, in 70 at-bats. In 2007, his first-full big league season, Young batted .237 with 32 home runs and 68 RBIs to finish fourth in the National League rookie of the year voting. He was named to the NL all-star team in 2010 during a season in which he hit .257 with 27 home runs, 91 RBIs and 94 runs scored. Through the 2010 season, Young had 98 homers in 328 games. Brian David Friday went 2 for 5 and scored two runs in the Indianapolis Indians's 8-5 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Monday. Friday graduated from Bellaire Episcopal High School.

A 2004 graduate of Bellaire Episcopal High School, Friday accepted a baseball scholarship at Rice University. He played three seasons (2005 to 2007) for the Owls ending his college career with a .327 batting average, 55 doubles, 40 stolen bases and 98 RBIs. As a sophomore, 2006, Friday was named a first-team college all-American at shortstop and a Conference USA all-star infielder after hitting .353 with 95 hits, 66 runs scored, 57 RBIs and nine home runs for the Owls. He was again selected a C-USA all-star infielder after his junior campaign, 2007, when Friday hit .336 with 29 doubles, three home runs and 30 RBIs. Friday was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third round (98th overall) of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. He quickly advanced through the Pirates' system making it to Triple-A Indianapolis of the International League early in the 2010 season, his second full year of professional baseball.
